The Wild and Mystic Island of Samothrace in Greece

Samothrace, an island in the northern Aegean Sea in Greece, has an enduring reputation of mysticism and off-the-beaten-path alternative travel. The island has attracted those seeking wild and unpredictable nature since antiquity, ever since the god Poseidon sat on the highest peak and marveled at the Trojan War. Described as the “Shaker of the Earth,” Poseidon was the god of the seas, storms, and earthquakes. His presence on the mountain caused the island to tremble with every step he took. Located on the Anatolian Fault, the island experienced earthquakes that resulted in rocks of various geological origins from the sea floor to rise to sea level. As a result, the ancient Greeks used these rocks to build their sanctuaries.

Mount Saos is the highest mountain on the island, which offers spectacular waterfalls, natural pools, and healing thermal springs. Its peak is called Fengari (“moon”) because its great height hides a view of the moon. Because the mountain was known for its unpredictable weather conditions that can turn violent, an elaborate initiation in a popular secret cult took place at the Sanctuary of the Gods, an impressive archaeological site of worship that can still be visited today.

In addition to its rugged beauty, the island also boasts high biodiversity of plant species, particularly with dense vegetation and old growth forests of Hungarian oak (Quercus frainetto) and plane (Platanus orientalis) trees. The poisonous yew tree (Taxus baccata), not often found in Greece, can be found at high altitudes.
