Awakening the Fessous: A Sacred Journey Along the Nile Through Egypt’s Chakra System
In the land of timeless sands and whispering temples, ancient Egypt holds secrets etched into stone—secrets not just of pharaohs and gods, but of the human soul. The ancients saw the body as a temple, a mirror of the cosmos, with energy centers they called fessous, located along the spine like sacred stations of consciousness.
Unlike the more widely known chakra system of the East, the fessous of Kemet (ancient Egypt) were intimately tied to the geography of the Nile River. Each center corresponded to a temple along the Nile’s path—a living map for inner transformation. But while many begin such journeys from the Root to the Crown, there is another way—one taught by those who walked this path in deep reverence.
The Journey Begins at the Heart
When I embarked on my own initiation along the Nile, we began not at the base, but at the center—the Heart. At Abydos, the temple of Osiris and the portal to ancient resurrection rites, our guide explained: “To awaken the divine within, one must first open the heart. All other fessous flow from this center.”
In Egyptian thought, the heart (ib) was the seat of consciousness. It was not the mind but the heart that was weighed in the afterlife. An open heart aligns all other centers. And so we began at Abydos, unlocking the gateway of love, compassion, and deep soul remembrance, before flowing both downward and upward through the spine of the Nile.
Let us take that sacred journey now as we do in our Anointed workshop series.
A Sacred Map: The Fessous and the Temples of the Nile
Below is the sacred correspondence between the seven energy centers, their matching temples, and the divine oil blends aligned with each. The recipes for the divine oils were meticulously translated from temple walls and studied by my guide in Egypt to be accurate blends that the ancients used and handcrafted through organic and ethnically sourced ingredients. This Nile and sense journey is more than symbolic—it is a literal blueprint of spiritual awakening carved into the Nile Valley.
Heart Fessous – Abydos & Dendera (Temples of Osiris and Hathor)
Body Location: Heart
Element: Air
Spiritual Energy: Compassion, emotional healing, universal love
We begin at Abydos, one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in Egypt. Here lies the tomb of Osiris—the god of resurrection—and the key to the mysteries of eternal life. Close by is Dendera, the joy-filled temple of Hathor, goddess of love, music, and divine femininity. As we wound around climbing to the roof of the Dendera temple I could feel the presence of the divine feminine surrounding and nurturing me in all her beauty and strength.
- Divine Oil: Hathor (Hieroglyphic: Nekhnem)
- Blend: Healing rose, gentle florals, and sacred herbs
- Invocation: Emotional harmony, self-love, divine connection
The heart center is where we remember who we truly are—divine beings having a human journey. From this center, all other fessous activate more fluidly, more truthfully.
Solar Plexus Fessous – Edfu (Temple of Horus)
Body Location: Solar plexus
Element: Fire
Spiritual Energy: Willpower, identity, inner strength
Traveling south to Edfu, the grand temple of Horus, the falcon-headed god of divine vision and protection. This is where your purpose ignites and your inner sun begins to shine.
- Divine Oil: Sekhmet (Hieroglyphic: Sefet)
- Blend: Fiery jasmine and ancient power-resins
- Invocation: Strength, mission, radiant action
Sacral Fessous – Kom Ombo (Temple of Sobek and Horus)
Body Location: Lower abdomen
Element: Water
Spiritual Energy: Sensuality, creativity, sacred pleasure
Next is the dual temple of Kom Ombo, where divine polarity is worshipped—Sobek, the primal crocodile, and Horus, the divine eye. This is the temple of embodiment, of creative expression, of sacred sexual energy.
- Divine Oil: Isis (Hieroglyphic: Heknw)
- Blend: Exotic musk, ancient aphrodisiacs, and tantric florals
- Invocation: Flow, desire, creative fertility
Root Fessous – Philae (Temple of Isis, Aswan)
Body Location: Base of spine
Element: Earth
Spiritual Energy: Safety, belonging, ancestral memory
Finally, we arrive at the root of the journey—Philae, the island temple of Isis, mother of magic and healer of the soul. In this most southern sanctuary, you remember your place on Earth. You ground into your lineage and into your sacred body. We felt the power of the sun rise over the Nile and felt the energy of an ancient metropolis filed with devotees and masters of the mystery schools.
- Divine Oil: Osiris (Hieroglyphic: Sty-Hb)
- Blend: Deep amber, grounding spices, and ancestral woods
- Invocation: Rootedness, protection, spiritual guidance
Throat Fessous – Saqqara
Body Location: Throat
Element: Ether
Spiritual Energy: Communication, truth, sacred sound, vibration
At Saqqara, the sacred necropolis of Memphis, the first pyramid rose from the Earth. This was no ordinary tomb, but a sound chamber, a harmonizing structure, aligned with the voice of the gods. The ancient priests used chanting, tones, and hieroglyphic incantations here—speaking the world into being. Saqqara teaches us that our words create reality. Here we descended into ancient tombs far below the surface and freely expressed our voices in ceremonial sound.
- Divine Oil: Thoth (Hieroglyphic: Twaatw)
- Blend: Soft amber, etheric herbs, oils to clear and empower the vocal channel
- Invocation: Speak your truth. Activate your divine sound. Align word with will.
Third Eye Fessous – The Great Sphinx
Body Location: Brow
Element: Light
Spiritual Energy: Insight, intuition, awakened perception
At the feet of the Great Sphinx, the Third Eye opens. It is here we begin to see—beyond illusion, beyond time. The Sphinx guards the hidden mysteries of the ancients.
- Divine Oil: Horus (Hieroglyphic: Haat-Ash)
- Blend: Sandalwood, sacred vision resins, pineal activators
- Invocation: Sight, clarity, higher wisdom
Crown Fessous – Great Pyramid of Giza
Body Location: Crown
Element: Cosmic Ether
Spiritual Energy: Divine union, universal consciousness
At last, we arrive at the Great Pyramid—the capstone of the Nile and the apex of the inner journey. This is the Crown Fessous, where divine light pours in and your soul remembers its starborn origin. Here we both ascended to the Kings chamber with its red granite sarcophagus and descended to the bottom where we crawled through a narrow tunnel to experience its ancient magic.
- Divine Oil: Ra (Hieroglyphic: Haat-Tjehenu)
- Blend: Rare blue lotus, high-frequency florals
- Invocation: Oneness, divine light, cosmic intelligence
Ritual Practice: Anointing the Inner Temple
These oils are not perfumes. They are vibrational keys, crafted in alignment with ancient formulas and designed to activate the sacred body-temple.
To Begin Your Fessous Ritual:
1. Begin with the Heart Fessous, anointing the center of your chest with Hathor oil.
2. Speak the name of the deity aloud in hieroglyphic form three times to activate the vibration.
3. Move from heart downward (Solar Plexus, Sacral, Root), then upward (Throat, Third Eye, Crown).
4. With each fessous, breathe in the fragrance and visualize it glowing and spinning in a clockwise direction.
5. Sit in stillness or sacred movement, allowing the energies to harmonize.
The Sacred Spiral Within
The ancient Egyptian journey through the fessous was not linear—it was spiralic, flowing with the rhythm of the soul and the Nile. Whether you walk this path through sacred pilgrimage or inner contemplation, remember:
You are the temple. You are the river. You are the star returning to itself.
Through the Anointed Series with Rie Katagiri of Erotic Movement Arts, we work to awaken, harmonize, and nurture each energy center through a combination of sacred oils, movement and sound. I guide you through each stop along the Nile utilizing the scents of authentic sacred oils and photography while Rie takes your body through the journey to release each energy center through intentional movement for each fessous. We close with delicious food and conversation to ground you.
