Tibetan Thangka Painting Workshop

about this event

Painting Yangchenma’s Face: An Introduction to Tibetan Thangka Painting with Tiffani Gyatso

In this two day workshop we will be introduced to the symbolism of tantric imagery and the practice of meditation through sacred painting. We will start with Yangchenma’s face, goddess of the arts and wisdom, who we will look to as both the inspiration and subject of our class.

After a theoretic introduction, we will begin the drawing of Yangchenma’s face. This drawing will follow traditional geometric proportions, with the consideration of her spiritual anatomy reminding us of our own sacred qualities and encouraging one to practice with presence and focus. After familiarizing ourselves with these classical proportions through sketching, we will begin with the basics of Tibetan painting. Working with wet and dry shading and finalizing in contour and golden detailing.

After this wonderful weekend together, you will take home a symbol of your own devoted presence with Yangchenma’s beautiful soft smile and gazing eyes

This course is introductory and open to all, not prior painting experience is needed. Please join if you feel motivated to use art as a support for meditation, and the practice of engaging with presence and devotion.

Additionally Gyatso will be giving a public introductory talk on Friday Oct. 18th at 7PM. For more details on the talk event please click here.
