Achieving financial literacy is essential to thriving in today’s world, but the fundamentals are clearly not being passed along equally to all Americans. There’s a disparity in the rates of financial literacy across racial and ethnic groups in the United States, with Black, Hispanic, and Native American populations tending to have lower rates of financial literacy than white and Asian populations. The Mama Glow Financial Wellness Series for Doulas is designed to empower individuals of all backgrounds to manage their personal finances and create a foundation for wealth generation.

The Course Syllabus
Week 1 – June 11: Developing your Financial Goals and Budgeting
In this session, we will do a deep dive into our financial habits and what drives us to make the decisions that we make. From there, we will ideate on our financial goals, both short term and long term, and come up with tangible ways to reduce our spending. When it comes to budgeting, we will learn how to budget for the unexpected, and avoid common budgeting pitfalls.
Week 2 – June 18: Managing Debt and Building Credit
In this session, we will explore the best strategies to manage debt and build credit. Managing credit involves both emotional issues such as developing an awareness of personal decision-making process and habits surrounding the use of credit, as well a technical issues such as understanding how credit cards work, the costs of revolving debt and the role of card utilization on credit reports and scores.
Week 3 – June 25: Saving and Investing
In this session, we will explore how to save for short term and long term goals, different types of savings options, and tips for investing. We will teach you about special savings accounts specially created for educational purposes and retirement savings, the importance of an emergency fund, how to preallocate your savings, and ways to get started with investing.

Leona Hariharan is the Partnerships and Programs Coordinator at Mama Glow. She is graduate from Brown University with a degree in Neuroscience and Performance Studies. She trained as Mama Glow Doula in 2021 and founded a doula collective on her college campus called Doulas@Brown. She is passionate about personal finance, and finding ways to make your money work for you.
