Bharata Natayam, Classical Indian Dance experience – all ages 6+

about this event

Join us for a special performance by dancers from the Soorya Arts Academy, followed by an introductory lesson for all to participate in. This is a shared, multigenerational experience to learn about the Classical Indian Dance of Bharata Natyam.

Originating in Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu then throughout Southern India, Bharatanatyam is one of India’s major forms of classical dance. Now danced by both women and men, the form expresses Hindu storytelling through the finesse of hand movements, emotional gestures, standing postures and accompanying music through rhythmic footwork.

Classical Dance and Music have been an integral part of India for more than 2000 years. Believed to be handed down by the Gods to humans, this rich Hindu cultural heritage is exemplary in form, substance, grace and training.

Soorya arts academy is an indian traditional dance and music school in Los Angeles. Classes are held at West Hills, Woodland Hills and Canoga Park. Students of all ages are are trained in Bharatanatyam, Carnatic vocal music and Mrudangam.

Founder, Artistic director Sushma Mohan is an outstanding proponent of Bharat Natyam dance form. She combines genuine understanding of the traditional form while remaining alive to new possibilities about how it can be adapted to more contemporary sensibilities. Sushma is a wonderful dancer, impeccable in her sense of rhythm and in command of her material and form.

This is an event for the whole family, which includes, young ones, elders, friends and community, ages 6 and up. No dance experience necessary. Not a drop off. Adults without children are welcome. Best for participants to know their left from right and be attentive to teachers.
