Yoga Nidra, also known as “yogic sleep,” is a form of body scan meditation done lying down or seated in a comfortable position. The body is still but the mind remains active, focusing on each part of the body as it is mentioned. As you bring awareness to each part of your body, it naturally relaxes.
This gentle yet deep practice has a multitude of benefits:
Enhances Meditation
Deep meditation is a state of literal thoughtlessness, when the mind is clear and quiet. But this is a challenging state to reach. By giving the mind an activity (scanning the body or following the guided cues), yoga nidra reduces the number of random thoughts the mind makes.
Prevents disease
Yoga Nidra has also been found to improve physical health by reducing pain and inflammation. By bringing the body into a state of deep ease, yoga nidra may reduce the dis-ease which causes disease.
Stress reduction
Yoga Nidra is known for its ability to reduce stress and tension in the body. The guided instructions and deep relaxation techniques used in Yoga Nidra help to release tension and promote a sense of calm and tranquility.
Improved sleep
Yoga Nidra can also improve sleep quality by reducing insomnia and promoting a deeper, more restful sleep. The deep relaxation achieved through Yoga Nidra can also help to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, which can improve overall well-being.
Increased self-awareness
Yoga Nidra also helps to increase self-awareness by bringing attention to the present moment and allowing for greater insight into one’s thoughts and emotions. This increased awareness can lead to improved decision-making and a greater sense of personal empowerment.
Improved mental clarity
Yoga Nidra is also known to improve mental clarity by reducing mental chatter and allowing the mind to become still. This can lead to improved focus, concentration and memory.
