Reiki originated in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, a trained samurai and monk. He coined the name “reiki” by combining the words rei “spirit” and ki “life energy.” Usui taught over 2000 people in his lifetime, guiding students to connect with, become a vessel for, and harness “universal life force” for healing and spiritual progression.
Usui intuited several symbols the practitioner uses during a reiki healing. These symbols are drawn or visualized in the mind during the session, and are often used to address specific issues. Some practitioners believe that the symbols act as a kind of “key” to unlock certain aspects of the energy field, while others view them simply as a tool for focusing the mind and directing energy.
