If you sit a lot, you need this! Yin yoga workshop on how to prevent and relieve piriformis syndrome and sciatica.

Diana will lead you in a gentle practice of Yin yoga and Qigong techniques, based in Traditional Chinese Medicine, to prevent and relieve pain from piriformis syndrome and sciatica.

Sciatica is the pain that results from irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve as it winds its way from the lumbar spine down through the legs. Sitting too much is one of the most common causes of sciatic pain.

Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle, located in the buttock region, spasms and causes buttock pain. The piriformis muscle also can irritate the nearby sciatic nerve and cause pain, numbness, and tingling along the back of the leg and into the foot, similar to sciatic pain.

• Pain in the lower back region

• A heavy feeling in the legs

• A constant, dull pain in the hips, back, and buttocks

• Burning or tingling sensation in the legs, toes, and feet

• Pain that gets worse when moving or changing posture

• Numbness or weakness in the legs and feet

• In extreme cases, people may experience a loss of movement in the region.

• A dull ache in the buttock

• Pain down the back of the thigh, calf, and foot (sciatica)

• Pain when walking up inclines or stairs

• Increased pain after prolonged sitting

• Reduced range of motion of the hip joint

Yin yoga is a passive restorative style that uses long-held floor poses to help you find stillness in the present moment, move energy and fluid through the tissues, and stimulate healing at the cellular level. The intention is to increase circulation and flexibility in the joints and bones and to regulate the flow of energy, giving you an energized sense of renewal. A regular practice of Yin yoga elongates and lubricates the deep connective tissues and lessens the impact of aging on the pelvis, hips, lower back, and spine. This practice can release deep layers of trauma and stress held in your fascia and connective tissue and reduce joint stiffness, increase mobility, and quiet the mind and nervous system to promote a more centered, grounded, and energized sense of renewal.

PROPS: Liberate Yourself provides yoga mats, blankets, meditation cushions, and blocks. You’re welcome to bring your own mat and props, if you’d like.

PLEASE NOTE: Class will be OUTSIDE in a lovely garden patio. It may be chilly, so DRESS IN LAYERS: yoga clothes, stretchy jacket/sweater, leggings/leg warmers, etc.
