A TALK WITH JAY NELSON & LLOYD KAHN

Join us for a dynamic conversation between two of the green building movement’s most fascinating makers. With a shared passion for surfing, gardening, building, and handcrafted homes, Lloyd Kahn and Jay Nelson bring two very different generations together for a unified exploration of what it takes to live light on the land and bright in the heart. Jay is a Bay Area artist known most notably for his handcrafted mobile structures and dwellings and Lloyd is founder of Shelter Publications and a curator of numerous books on green building and the evolution of organic architecture. Together they’ll discuss their unique practices and philosophies in the context of modern nomadic culture, covering Lloyd’s experience building and living in Big Sur in the 60s and will also share images from the book they’re creating about mobile living: Hit the Road, Jack.

Lloyd Kahn is the founding editor-in-chief of Shelter Publications, Inc., and is the former Shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog. He is also an author, photographer, and pioneer of the green building and green architecture movements. At the age of 84, Lloyd continues to surf, paddleboard, and skateboard.

Jay Nelson is an artist, a woodworker, surfer, treehouse aficionado and family man. Selected exhibitions include Bolinas Art Museum, The Berkeley Art Museum, the Oakland Museum of Art, Triple Base Gallery in San Francisco, V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, and the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design.
